teaching spiderman to swim

One sunny Wednesday at your local day camp- a reluctant kinder-camper sits on the steps of the shallow end of the pool. "come in- I'll help you I promise- you'll be fine. It's not even deep. See- he can touch!" - "NO"- "why not- it's really nice in here I swear" - "NO!"- a thought pushes it's way into my thoughts, currently fully occupied with other soothing words about the water's temperature and non-shark infestedness- Spiderman.

The visions of the dozens of pieces of paper already used today in order to fill the wishes of my small camper's desire to draw Spiderman- again and again and again- each time finishing his masterpiece in order to hold it up before me clutched in a tiny, but sure grasp- "Spiderman!" - the gleeful explanation is all that is necessary to define the creation in front of me: perhaps ressembling spider more than man, but nonetheless the circle of red and frantically positioned lines of black clearly drawn with intent- "ooh, another one!" i gleefully reply as I put this treasure into the folder already bursting with earlier works: all similiar, but each varying slightly as purple or blue or orange crayons each take their turn in joining the entity of superhero might that is our spidery friend. "pshhh, pshhh" is the sound of my young companion as he shoots spidery webs out of his wrists, "I'm spiderMAN!"

"Did you know that spiderman loves to swim" It's too easy- he'll see through it. his eyes question back at me and sure enough the reply is unconvinced "no- he climbs up buildings with his spiderwebs"- "Yeah, sure, he does that too- but really- every superhero swims. Otherwise Aquaman would totally crush them" He has no reply but his face gives a little to the confrontation of living up to such standards- can shoot spiderwebs out of his wrists AND swim! Across the pool comes a shout from another camper "I'm spiderman!!" as the kid leaps into the water. "NO! I'm SpiderMan!!" Into the water he goes yelling all the way over his shoulder, just in case anyone couldn't tell from his superior swimming powers: "I'm Spiderman, I'M SPIDERMAN!".

Good work, oh councelor of great brilliance. Which is greater, a wise man once asked, spider-web-from-wrist-action-power, or the understanding of the workings of the mind? Which indeed.

This is really cute...it sounds EXACTLY like every minute at camp...tricking small innocent children into doing what they are supposed to be doing! Well written, are you sure you don't want to be a writer? ; )
