ok it's been a few. yesterday i volunteered at the blood drive (i got to carry blood!!) so that was good. have been discussing with friend and hallmate Aiko about her experience with the polarbear club: every thursday there's a "study break" and the polar bear members (being anyone who feels like going) go to the nearby pond and strip naked and go into the water. Aiko went with her moo leader once, we've been contemplating whether it should be attempted by us.. i'm personally a little self concious about it but would seriously want to try it at some point... hmm..

anyways otherwise i had my first french test and i got a B. i'm indifferent about it. Today i had lab, which is fun as usual, but got back last weeks quiz with a 3/7- that's an F in case you're wondering. wasn't thrilled about that. And my homework wasn't much better at a D. so so far lab grades arn't stellar. anyways enough report carding. just thought it would be nice to show you that i'm not exagerating when i say bio is ridiculous.

I had to make another web site for computer science, this one's more interesting than the last b/c i had to use JAVA script. I'm actually doing pretty well in COMP SCI it's scary because i feel myself being pulled down the timmy path everytime i enjoy doing those assignments. anyway here's the link, let me know what you think:

http://www.cs.middlebury.edu/~lwickber/day2/

Had a hall study break today where we gathered in our JC's room. She's a theatre major and pre-med. maybe i could be like katie!! unless she switches her major. well... then i wouldn't be would i.

What I'm Reading: (stole this idea from sam's blog)
For Fun- Fahrenheit 451 - good book, interesting, short. not much else to say about it. i learned in computer science that the scale of fahrenheit was set up by measuring tempertures in a certain city in spain for a year- lowest temperture set to 0, highest to 100. so it's really stupid that we all use it. here's calling for the celsius revolution!!!

For class- The professeur and the madman- about this criminally insane guy who helped write lots of entries for OED. he'd killed a guy and was locked up in an asylum, he supposidly had lots of STD's from sleeping with prostitutes. the editors of the OED didn't know this until after they'd published many of his entries, didn't take them out later either.

What I'm Watching- watched some of bridget jones's diary today, that was nice. Saw Les Choristes yesterday, had to for french but it was awesome- totally recomend it. i think it came out a year or so ago. it's adorable

what i'm not doing because i'm writing this blog: A Lab write up. We have to say what we learned from the lab. how bout- i'm retarded. she actually said we could pretty much say that. but i actually did learn from it. i always understand what we're doing and how to do it. i just can't do the quizzes!!

so for all of you who have vacation in like a week: you suck... actually you don't you're awesome and i love you and you should come visit. if you want to spend the night my roomate has an airmattress. You should all descend upon middlebury soon!! before it's too cold for me to show you around ( i got wind-burn today from riding my bike while listening to moulin rouge, it makes me peddle faster)

oh and orchestra's going well, but i feel like a newb, i desperatly need to practice more but the other trumpetors are super nice about it.

sorry that was so long, that's what i get for not writing for four days.

oh and here's what the begining's a reference to in case you didn't catch it.

guess who's not studying right now for her bio quiz tommarow?? just finished watching Grey's anatomy- I love that show. Weekend's been fun. Friday night i went to see War of the Worlds- weirdest ending ever! and then watched Life is a House in the common room with some girls from my floor. that movie is soo good. It has Hayden Christenson in it (Anniken) and he's definitly really hot, but that's not the only selling point. Saturday i slept in for the first time since i've been here, which was wonderful. than i watched Real World (i'd never seen it before). Spent the rest of the day finishing stupid book "A guide to the Oxford English Dictionary" don't read it. At night we went to play on some swings and walk around town, which was totally closed up (it being past 9 heaven forbid). when we got back we watched spirited away in someone's room, while through the open windows we could hear drunken renditions of "Mr. Brightside" and howling. Today spent doing homework allllllll day. I'm so sick of homework!!!! finished just in time to watch Grey's. now i have to review a bit and go to bed.

producers

i just found out through sam's blog that the producers comes out december 26th. we have to all go see it, ok????

yummm smoothies

Just to quell (is that a word?) the suspense i'll tell you there was no harry potter quote of the day. :( I had my bio lab today and my proffeseur decided to give us a pop quiz. it was exactly like that comic i posted. actually writing that instead of the b.s i pulled out of my ass would have been better. i'm definitly failing it. owell. But the lab itself was really fun. we got to extract dna from ourselves- using micro pipettes, i'm a huge fan of micro-pippettes. while they were spinning out in the centrifuge we went on a little "field trip" and saw the school's dna sequencer, which i guess is supposed to be really cool: they used them on the human genome project. Anyway so the lab went well, i have nice sticky dna! and next week we get to extract dna from strawberries and she said we'd get to make smoothies out of them, but i think she was kidding.

then i had orchestra, which is really fun because everyone is so nice. but we got out early because there was the annual "clifford symposium": all the dining halls were shut down for dinner and there was a big picnic on the quad in front of mead chapel. i guess there was a speaker for environmental issues, but i didn't stay long enough to hear it.

spent far too much time on homework yet again, but general mood is light and moulin rouge soundtrack is playing, so in general i think it must be a good day... will ignore issue of stupid lab assignment..... grrrr.. anywho, i got a calling card last weekend so i'll try to give y'all a call sometime this weekend, and leah: i promise to send out your b-day present asap. it's just that the mail room doesn't ship packages so i have to go to town and bah, that's tough but i will do it!!!

Edit: i forgot one v. important thing. jess told me about this absolutly awesome clip called "they're taking the hobbits to isengard" everyone must see it!!!! http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/hobbits

edit: have now watched it 4 times and still love it

i've realised that i really hate mornings. the time between my alarm going off and getting to class sucks. i'm always really emo. and then as soon as class starts i'm fine. I had my first yoga class today which was soooo nice. i felt all relaxed and zen. and then went back to dorm to plow through tonight's homework, which actually wasn't nearly as bad as last nights... but still. anyways i have no idea what i'm doing this weekend, other than homework... today's harry potter quote:

"ah well... wand still in your jeans? both buttucks still on? ok.. let's go then"
-tonks

oh, and i stayed up way later than i should have last night watching the end of "the big chill" i actually seriously think that is a great movie... i don't know if anyone else would like it, but i declare it good. i made a photo collage with pics of you guys above my desk today. it's purty.
ok school is officially insane, i just finished all my homework(it's 1:30am). what the hell!! what happened to high school.. oh yeah and what were we complaining about the whole time. College is like bad boot camp, at least in boot camp you're not afraid of gaining 15 pounds. here's my fav calvin and hobbes to extend to you what my first bio exam will probably be like :
sorry you have to click this link, but it's worth it!

the harry potter quote of the day was...

"I'll look for him later, I expect I'll find him upstairs crying his eyes out over my mother's old bloomers or something....Of course he might have crawled into the airing cupboard and died....But I mustn't get my hopes up...."

so, yeah i should really be in bed right now.. actually am in bed, but should be sleeping.. well you get the gist. After listening to Moulin Rouge b4 bed last night woke up with "come what may" stuck in my head which made me extremely emo until i got to class at which point was just extremly boredo. I had to make a webpage for my Comp Sci course. It's supposed to be links to Hurricane Katrina sites. http://www.cs.middlebury.edu/~lwickber/day1/ I wrote out the HTML code all by myself!! arn't you proud?! you can see it by going to view (on bar at top) and then click on source. or at least pretend you did!

Took a lindy-hop dance class tonight which turned out to be pretty lame. ok, should really go to bed, i promise better posts sometime this week.

Forgot to mention: Roomate (susan) and I started posting harry potter quote of the day on our dry-erase board, thought i'd let you in on the fun: Today's was
"give her hell from us, peeves"
-Weasly Twins upon departure from school (order of the pheonix)

mood swings

so yesterday i tried to stay calm; but a combination of home-sickness, pms and seriously confusing class and probably not enough sleep left me a jello-ey mess. I was seriously walking around biting my lip to keep from sobbing. Finally broke down after roomate left for meeting. I tried to read harry potter but i was at the end (you know right after the really big thing happens) and that didn't really lift my spirits. so i finally just called my mom and in between sniffling and blowing my nose managed to get my point accross. Before bed cheered myself up a bit more by reading Get Fuzzy under my blanket with a flashlight- have soo always wanted to do that. So i think i've survived my major crises, hopefully skies will all be beautiful and sunny from here on. (right...)

But seriously today was much better. latter called my mom so she could know i wasn't always extremely emotionaly disfunctional and she said they were going to see one of timmy's plays at RPI friday... and i get to go too!! happy dance...dededededede... she's picking me up tomarrow around noon after my last class and i'm going home for the weekend. My mom thinks it might help if i can tackle some of this really confusing bio crap in a familiar setting. I think it'll also be good simple because i don't plan to participate in the seriously heavy drinking that is going to occur this being the first full weekend with upperclassmen.

My roomate is currently at a swiming/diving team party. apparently swimmers are huge idiots according to susan (susan being my roomate) they like to get really drunk at really inconvenient times.. like the night before meets and such.

there's lots of howling coming from down the hall... what the hell is going on?? college is so random. i think that's the best word to describe it. both tuesday and wednesday night i was going to bed when roaving accopella groups wandered through our hall. one time me and my roomate were just sitting in our room when someone burst in yelling "PARTY AT THE FARM, WANNA COME!!??" we declined having no idea what the hell the "farm" is nor who this person was, nor why they apparently wanted to party at such a random time. yesterday someone knocked on my door asking if i wanted a smoothie.... a smoothie??? why.. at 11 at night would someone ask you if i wanted a smoothie. alchohal i suspect is behind much of it... sooo random

anyways i'm fine, but still miss all of you super much!!

Love Yous!!!

i take back everything i said about classes being easy. i just got back from my bio class and i have no idea what the profeseur was talking about. I want to crawl in a hole and sleep for the next four months. this sucks

I found the classes web site-here's an answer he gives trying to Clarify the topic omg!!! what the hell is going on!!!:

There were many questions on the origin of RNA and cells. The truth of the matter is that no one really knows how the first cell came to be. RNA can self polymerize (form phosphodiester bonds between monomers) in the laboratory, indicating that it might have done this on the abiotic Earth. Autocatalysis and copying also occur in laboratory settings and thus may have occurred long ago. Short RNAs can be made to ‘reproduce’ in solution. The hammerhead ribozyme was an example of a functional 40 base RNA that exists today, again, provided as evidence that such chemistry could have happened abiotically. Evidence suggests that RNA that had self-polymerized was encapsulated in a protobiont (lipid sphere) and thus was protected. In a modern sense, this is not a cell. But on the abiotic Earth it was probably the most cellular of all organic molecule combinations that existed. The definitions of life blur at the beginning.

decompressing

ok, katie you were totally right. there was nothing to worry about. all my proffesseurs are really nice and so far havn't overloaded me with information. It actually seems alot easier than i thought. although french is tough; i know i can do it.. but it takes forever. since middlebury is insane about french you have to take it five days a week until you get to advanced. which means i have french homework 5 days a week as well. But still, my professeur seems really nice and french. My first class was at 8 am (actually i always have an 8 am class) but i was done by 12:05. I'm almost at the end of harry potter and am fearing the day when i have to let that crutch go. it's been so comforting to escape into.. sad.. this afternoon i went to check out the library and do homework.. ended up falling asleep in library doing french. oh and

Happy Birthday Leah!!! (that's for tommarow obviously)

words cannot express...

classes start tomarrow and i'm so freaked out. I feel like a kindergardener on their first day of school; really terrified and all i want to do is go home and curl up in my bed. I can't really say what i'm scared of; it's just this feeling of impending doom. my mind is like racing thinking "what are you stupid? why the hell are you doing this?' my fight or flight reaction is kicking in, and i have no desire to fight. now i know what it feels like to have pre-wedding jitters- or at least i think this is what it feels like. i'm seriously hyperventilating right now......askljfkjaweoi!!!! ok.... i'm just going ot read some harry potter, get some sleep and hopefully everything will be better tommarow... god i can't wait till break- i just want to be at home, sitting on my couch watching conan o'brian with no-bib walking on my head... i miss you guys!!!!!

orientation bonanza

Hello again. midd's fun but i miss everyone. The upperclassmen arrived today and i feel like such a newb. classes start tommarow. oh yeah, classes... that's why i'm here! thursday we had a square dance which was really fun, but confusing. Friday night we went to an 80's dance, which was awesome! everybody got dressed up in leggings and ripped t-shirts along with side pony-tails. but the best part was the music: including 'love is a battlefield' 'jessie's girl' and 'like a prayer'. i was glad to discover that the whipping your shirt off during the afore-mentioned maddona song was celebrated by mostly guys, with the exception of like one girl. Last night was the 'first-chance dance' supposidly the opening to the school year but also rumored to be creepy occasion in which upperclassmen could have their first chance to hook up with freshmen. turned out to be partially true, but as most of the freshmen were drunk anyways i don't think they minded.

My dorm is pretty cool we have a floor '0' which is all boys called the dungeon, first-floor is guys, second floor (where i am) has my wing which is all girls, and another coed wing- which means they share a bathroom. i've heard it's ackward but great because you can sing duets in the shower. On the third floor it's all girls but they have ridiculously big rooms- but according to this book my roommate has it's called the nunnery and all girls who live there are supposed to be prudes, it's not true, but it makes all of us who are jealous feel a little better.

my classes end by noon everyday except thursday, if you're ever trying to get in touch. hope all is well!

Greetings from Midd

announcement: changed comment settings so now anyone can comment- don't even need account so please do!!!

So packing went okay, until i realized i had to shove everthing in my car. ended up sitting cross legged on seat because all foot room was taken up by a ginormous box of crap. But although i managed to almost overflow my car everybody else here has twice as much crap it seems. I got moved in really quick- aided by gator trucks and very energetic upperclassmen volunteers. parents left early afternoon.

Orientation at midd is pretty relaxed- there's scheduled stuff, but it's spread out and so far there's been lots of time to just settle in. last night our first hall meeting consisted of attempting to run a very spontaneous obstacle course which involved rolling over a ball and doing a face plant; this seemed to be the main attraction of the event. Our commons leaders also informed us of a lovely midd tradition in which you're supposed to take your shirt off everytime you hear 'like a prayer' by madonna. how classy.

Have been gradually realizing how many parallels there are between harry potter and middlebury- v. entertaining. for example our common systems work just like houses- except we don't have quidditch teams. ok here's a sidetrack- have you ever noticed that they never bathe at hogwarts?? there's not even mention of showers. are wizards always magically clean?

and like harry i like getting mail, or phone calls so please, please call me. or at least blog!!

blleee, gaaa and other expresions of frazzlement

geee... i'm getting butterflies!! today would've been spent seriously packing if hadn't already premtively done that so instead wandered around in strange giddy mood which inspired much random dancing and happy dances. one more day and two more nights in own house-- will remember to savor showers (thanks for the advice katie!) .

so yesterday was really cool cause i got to go visit Castleton. Katie introduced me to her roommates and room; must say has best view on campus;) was definitly nice to see parts of crew again; lame shout out here to myles, taylor, troy and ryan, as if any of them actually read this.

eeg... am sure have forgotten to pack everthing..... will seriously arrive at campus with only one pair of underwear. mom bought dvd of Faulty Towers so if underwear impaired at school may cause problems as will certainly wet myself watching nazi episode. (highly recomended if one hasn't had pleasure)(of watching show, not wetting oneself).

Oky Doky.. will probably be last post before off to midd as will be both hysterical and busy tommarow, or if not busy perplexed at why am not busy and trying to remember the hundred things havn 't packed as obviously it should have taken more time. So farewell till i'm there. ahhHHHHH!!!!

russian lesbians

well, i suppose it's time to write again. Jess- i seriously understand your love for typing manically while listening to music. Problem is i'm listening to Tatu (russian singing duo) and is very fast paced. Makes it challanging to form complete thoughts before typing; so apology in advance if this post is sporadic and random. Mekan once told me the girls in tatu were lesbians and he had this really weird picture of them on his computer. still they make pretty good music.

since havn't really updates since trip to canada here is brief overview-

Wednesday- drove to St. Johnsbury to see museum. Is very small but actually pretty cool. Lots of taxidermy on first floor but displayed in very impressive manner. Almost shit myself when i turned around a corner to face humungously tall moose. I swear, if i ever saw one of those in real life that close i would proceed to loose control of bodily functions. I got to navigate and actually got us to Quebec city, which if you knew anything about my sense of direction can only be described as miracle. (i once had to check with my dad that i indeed did have to go south on 91 to get to the mall in massachussets. was also convinced for large part of my life that new Hampshire was west of us).

Thursday- spent morning walking about realizing that nothing opens there until around 10, so proceded to stare at buoys which where displayed and explained at length at small park. Buoys, suprise suprise, are not that interesting. Afternoon was much better, took nice stroll on this board walk thing along cliff edge in city- highly recomended if ever in Quebec. Had good laughs as my mom kept trying to use small french phrases.

Friday- drove home reading Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix- if you ask me there's a serious plot problem in the end where Hermione and Harrry suddenly have their wands back after Umbridge confiscated them... explination??? Had read it before but am now primed to finally read 6th book.

Saturday- nothing interesting, am getting carried away with up tempo music.....dododododododo. anyway

I'll write about today tomarrow, as am seriously unable to concentrate.

4 more days at home

It's getting to be crunch time. I'm excited and scared and thrilled and well.. down right giddy. i've got most everything packed, which might be slightly pre-emptive as i suppose i'm going to need to wear something. or not, maybe i've just stumbled on a way to amuse myself for the next four days. oddly what i'm really looking foreward to is being back in class. But my nervous side seeks advice... any tips for surviving orientation, being cool, what to bring, what not to eat-- would all be apprectiated immensly. please write!!
